It's always a rush for me to finish but I truly enjoy the learning.
What were your favorite discoveries or exercises on this learning journey?
1. I loved learning how to screencast and playing around with the video resources and finding a Voki alternative to Avatar. I also enjoyed reading and reflecting on Digital Citizenship. It clarified some thoughts in my mind that I already had about the interaction between students, classroom behavior, home behavior, and the real-world consequences of interacting with a digital world.

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
2. These two summer classes have, at once, made me feel totally panicked about how much I DON'T know and very excited about what's out there. I think I need to make a Word List of each application (and its use) that we have studied over the last 2 summers so I can just remember what we've done. If I don't use everything I forget what's out there when I need it. So many resources are available but it takes time to learn how to use them. On a side thought - since we have all started with the Activboards, I feel behind in my knowledge and use of flip charts since I didn't work on that TOO this summer. I guess it's best to just try to take what you feel are the best resources and familiarize yourself with them in small chunks.

Were there any take-a-ways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?3. I spent HOURS on the SecondLife thing! Everything always takes me way longer than I expect. I was REALLY surprised about how excited I got about the IPhone/ITouch possibilities.

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
4. It's difficult to explore some tools when you are not in possession of certain equipment over the summer such as an IPhone and a video camera. On a side note - I would like to have an Activboard summer class that had one lesson for each tool and how to use actions, etc. I'm sure there are lots of internet resources for finding, using and revising flip charts. Maybe it's not Web 2.0 but it would be helpful.
The highlighted and bolded suggestion would be to have a centralized HELP forum so we could all go to the same place for answers to our problems
All, in all, I am very thankful that you have developed this class for those of us that like to be summer learners! Thanks for all your work, creativity, and organization!

More Things #6 - Belated I-Touch

SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE TO SIGN GUESTBOOK & VIEW OTHER TOOLS!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MpdUS3usJqA/SoDIPMHjddI/AAAAAAAAACo/gcVu1PMy-0E/s200/j0441708.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368510919102133714" />
An apple by any other name....

I do not own any Apple products so I'm posting this out of order (last) because I wanted to go to the mall and have someone at the Apple store show me the hardware. Before I looked into this my immediate reaction was to be doubtful regarding its uses but the more I think about it the more applications I can imagine. Everything looked extremely easy as far as downloading applications. If it was going to be used in a library or classroom I think it would be better to have several I-Touches instead of I-Phones because, as long as there is wifi available you can have unlimited internet access, whereas with the I-Phone you have to pay a monthly account & media fee. I did not know this. Now I want an I-Touch! Also, if I understood correctly from the Apple staff, you can pay for one application download on your computer and then install it on an unlimited number of devices.
Possible Classroom Applications:
A classroom set of I-Touch would work GREAT as the warm-up math activity at the beginning of each class. What a way to get instant, actively-involved students. OK, where's the grant I can apply for?????
Use a group (4) of I-Touch as a Math Center where everyone is using the same application or practicing math when other work is finished. Lots of incentive to be able to listen to music AND do math!
Download presentations and videos made by students to be shared with other students
Send messages to participants of a flat classroom project
Use them as an in-classroom research center that doesn't have to be plugged into the wall (takes up much less room!)
Use to take and post pictures on another site for science walks and class projects
Places where I found Education Apps video reviews:
bliptv.com
vodpod.com
Here is an AWESOME Ning that is ALL about this subject.

Visit IEAR - I Education Apps Review for the IPhone and ITouch

More Things #11 Becoming a Digital Citizen

SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE TO SIGN GUESTBOOK & VIEW OTHER TOOLS!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 148px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MpdUS3usJqA/Sn_nspLaczI/AAAAAAAAACY/ApEED1aP5Do/s200/Internet2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368264035002905394" />
http://www.nettysworld.com.au/
An Australian government web site aimed at teaching Digital Citizenship to very young children:

Thoughts for kids while researching on the internet:
1.SEARCH, VALIDATE SOURCES, DIG DEEPER - the first thing you find is not always pertinent, best, or valid. Google is not the be-all and end-all of valuable sources.
Begin to teach kids about the deep web of information that is not always found on a surface web search. When I was in college l had to get passwords for different data bases that were licensed by the college and actually check out the different disks! I think this is a bit analogous to the Deep Web. You had to d-i-g!

2.Give students the criteria to evaluate an online resource and have them practice. Make them realize that a library and the internet are places to dive deep for the pearl, not grab the first fake they see.

3.Teach students to take organized notes - even in math class! Teach kids to draw pictures to represent how they understand an idea-this will help them synthesize what they have read from various sources. I truly believe that if you can't draw the concept you don't understand the concept internally. Questioning, shifting, sorting, and pulling ideas into a cohesive picture is very connected to verifying sources and their worth.

4.Teach the kids, after reading a multitude of sources, to say to themselves, "What do I think?"

5.I love the Digital Citizenship blog that lists The Nine Themes of Digital Citizenship. The internet is a REAL world so real-world behavior must be followed. There are laws that must be followed. There is etiquette that must be followed. There are safety and health rules that must be followed. I think students have a tendency to think the internet is not a "real" world. If a student has never been to a live performance or play before, they must be taught that it is not TV or video and that there are live performers on the stage that must be acknowledged, behaviorally, in the proper way. In the same way, students must be taught that the internet is also "alive" in that actions with hardware and on the internet stage can and do have real-world consequences.

Sources: http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2007/09/what-should-be-done-about-digital.html
Deep Web thoughts: http://theconnectedclassroom.wikispaces.com/SearchStrategies
http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2007/08/take-kids-deep-inside-where-deep-web.html
http://www.digitalcitizenship.net/Nine_Elements.html

More Things #10 Virtual Zoo!

SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE TO SIGN GUESTBOOK & VIEW OTHER TOOLS!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 117px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MpdUS3usJqA/Sn6Z57gmNoI/AAAAAAAAACQ/AdqJYaxizn0/s200/2318759571_3cfd5204f32nlife.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367897026378217090" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 1px; height: 1px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MpdUS3usJqA/Sn6YbXk-XnI/AAAAAAAAACI/MW85IZ-dw8Y/s200/spacer.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367895401825197682" />

http://www.flickr.com/photos/photolibraries/ / CC BY-ND 2.0

View of Bell Library and towers, Info International, Second Life Library 2.0 and reference patio

Well the good news is that this Second Life thing is kind of fun. The bad news is that it takes hours and hours and hours to figure out what is happening even if you get help. I kept getting so much "lag" time (delay of actions and movements caused by the server load) that I had to keep logging off and going back. I still couldn't find much decent clothing even after going to the freebie sights so I was walking around in a tuxedo dress--better than see-through nighties and belly button rings! I teleported to London and found a BUNCH of free stuff. After I figured out how to open all the boxes (go upstairs in The Shelter} I managed to find other items of clothing and lots of other (ahem) items that needed to be deleted. Speaking of which (adult content) I didn't see any "You must be 18" signs or agreements and I even heard some very YOUNG people talking on chat once. Since there is a TEEN world, I imagine there are supposed to be restrictions but I didn't see any attempt at it. Something a teacher would have to watch. I think the best tutorials are the YouTube videos. Here is another good reference:
http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2006/07/20/newbie-tip-where-should-i-go/

I agree with Nathan Lowell who commented on SecondLife on CoolCatTeacher blog - "Before a teacher can teach with these tools, they first have to learn how to learn with them. Any teacher who wants to know 'best practices for the use of tool X in the classroom' really better be using tool X in his/her own learning practice. If they're not, it's kinda like trying to teach driver's ed when you don't know how to drive....We cannot understand it if we do not participate in it....We cannot teach it if we do not understand it." This is not a learn-with-the-kids kind of thing. You HAVE TO know what you're doing.

I find it intriguing and I'll keep exploring but it is a long learning process even with at guide. At first I couldn't find any "friends" to help me but later on (much later) I found The Shelter (as suggested in the link above). I think the kids would LOVE SecondLife but it's basically a simplified computer modeling program that requires building items from geometric shapes. My daughter, who did computer animation throughout high school, says that students have at least a year-long learning curve when it comes to animation programs but this should be simpler for them (not me!). Social learning, math, music, language, life-skills, money management, local and community planning. All these things could be virtually experienced and shared. I guess some of these other tools allows for easier searching and direct insertion of videos from YouTube and pictures from other sources AND it enables uploading your PowerPoint . I actually find PowerPoints much easier to make than the FLIPCHARTS we are now learning to make for our Activboards. Students, however, could really enhance their research and technology skills by using these tools when they make a PowerPoint. An even higher level skill could be used to plan out how their PowerPoint could be interactive with their audience if it were to be shown on the Activboard.
Problem: Just to TRY, I uploaded a Powerpoint to Slideshare but it kept telling me there was an error when I tried to set it to allow "embedding" code. I looked at the offered widget which is supposed to allow you to post your presentations on a blog but it looked like it would take up lots of room so I used the Blog badge embed code. (see upper right side-bar)

I'm going to paste the recommendations here so I can access them later:
If you a have a long text-based PPT, use Scribd since visitors can quickly search for text phrases.

If you want to edit the PPT online before sharing, Zoho Show is the way to go.

If you want to integrate the PowerPoint presentation with pictures from Flickr, videos from YouTube and even MP3, SplashCast is the perfect service for you. Very clean interface. [NOTE: When I looked at this I could only find TV Viewing capability]

If you want a quick and easy way for sharing (multiple) PPTs, go with Slideshare. Your presentation will gain maximum visibility here. [See note above]

[Note: authorStream is only for PowerPoint 2007] http://www.authorstream.com/

More Things #8 Screencasting-It's One Word!

SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE TO SIGN GUESTBOOK & VIEW OTHER TOOLS!

I used FreeScreencast.com which required that I download the software (which was a Beta version) and the following Prerequisites:
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (22.42MB) If you run windows updates frequently, you most likely already have this.
Windows Media Encoder (9.92MB) Another Microsoft update to windows.
At first I didn't download all 3 and it didn't work so I went back and downloaded all 3 (then installed) and it worked. I just followed the step-by-step directions and it was really easy. I LOVE this!! Kids from the previous year could record "How To" screencasts for the incoming new students. Very useful tool for the teacher too!!
If it embeds OK - all went well! I'm trying to embed the smaller size option. There was a slight hangup with highlighting the code. I had to play with the html a little bit because it kept saying the tag was not "closed". I went to [http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forum/Setup-Problems/10099/Blogger-Embedding] to find solution and it said that blogger sometimes doesn't close properly and to add an embed code at the end which I can't print here because blogger won't publish the embed script. Then I noticed that it changed the sizing a from 640x480 to 640x500 so I changed it back! I wish I knew how to size these videos a little better because now they are overlapping on my blog! I think I'm just going to change the number in the html and then you can click on "full screen" if you want to view. I have experimented with embedding the Hula video player in the blog - If you see it in the right colomn - it worked! I'm trying to find some theater video I could collect for my new theater class. No luck so far. But I did get an "attention getter" idea of playing a music video for the 1st few minutes of each class - math OR theater - on my Activboard. I've embedded an MTV video (Hulu) from "Mute Math" (a group I found doing a math search ironically). It's from the movie loved by many teens, "Twilight" I believe. Keep scrolling down after the video.

Mute Math - New Music - More Music Videos

On METACAFE (AWESOME PLACE) I found lots of MATH videos. It has been interesting. I was afraid of the privacy aspect of it and not sure about cross-connecting my different circles of friends. You have to be selective (and not feel guilty) about who you accept as friends and really think about who you are posting to. It has been fun reconnecting with acquaintances and pictures from the past but some of the stuff is just a waste of time (like all these token things and quizzes, etc. that get sent back and forth). It is nice to just post mini-thoughts, etc., however, and even to know that you are connecting with a wider circle of friends, even if it be in micro-chatter. Professionally, I would think that you would want to start a separate Facebook account. I've been told that there is no policy but my teenagers have told me that their high school teachers have said they can't be "friends" with them until they graduate. The policy of Facebook being opened up at the district level was, as far as I understand, a way to track graduates. Even Laura Walker on her web site article about Twitter says:
"Just this week I am putting together a policy recommendation for staff at my school about ensuring their personal details on Facebook are secure. Several colleagues (including Alex Blagona @blagona and Sacha Van Straten @svanstraten) have been kind enough to share work..."

TWITTER - I have signed up for a twitter account and as far as I can tell by the links on Library2Play2, the most important thing regarding using Twitter as an educational took, is slowly building your network carefully so that it supplies you with links to valuable information, not fluff. Does twittering on your phone cost you internet time? No. Could students Twitter you about assignment questions? Yes. Could you have a classroom twitter conference? Why not! I am going to post cool young-people videos I find that show an amazing technical expertise. Guess what? I found the first one through a twitter post!

BACKCHANNELING: I think if a classroom of students were equipped with a computer or cell phone it could be an interesting thing to try. I've often wished there was a way for the kids that never speak to engage without fear. In middle school there would definitely need to be a preview moderator. You wouldn't want middle school students blurting on twitter for all to see. Feelings need to be protected at that age.

More Things #4 Part 2

Example of TeacherTube video I've used and would like to make and upload for math

9 Multiplication Tables HipHop Music Video

9 Multiplication Tables HipHop Music Video

Shared via AddThis

More Things #4 - Video Hosting

Seems easy. I have used TeacherTube before. Here is an example of a video I DOWNloaded to show on my Activboard. It's a great attention getter when you are trying to grab 7th graders attention in a math lab. Even in 7th grade some kids don't know their math facts. It would be fun to have them make math fact raps and upload them to YouTube or TeacherTube. I used to do all kinds of songs and chants in 5th grade but the 7th graders don't seem so excited about it, unfortunately. I found one high school example of a FACT RAP. I'll post it below also. I'm also teaching theater next year so I'm sure there are many more applications for videos in that class. Now, I just need a video camera!

Mr Duey - Fractions Official Video

Mr Duey - Fractions Official Video

Shared via AddThis

MORE THINGS #3

SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE TO SIGN GUESTBOOK & VIEW OTHER TOOLS!

I downloaded Skype successfully. I've used Skype at home to talk to my niece in China! It is a great tool. Adding the video web cam component could really take it to new heights. Many teachers use the Activboard now so the screen picture would be great in a classsroom. I liked the idea of students using it when they are absent to get a missed lesson, getting after-school tutorials online (can it conference-call?). Also a theater class could perform a scene to a play and share it with parents or another school. Lots and lots of great uses! I took lots of classes on tape (using VHS tapes in the olden days!)in college and I found it quite helpful.

Snowy Range in July

EXTRA THING! Normally, you would think Wordle wouldn't really be useful for math but since I use the Activboard I think this could be used for a wonderful hook at the beginning of lessons. It's interesting, colorful, & I LOVE the totally new fonts that can be used. It can also be used as a new twist on a WORD WALL that the kids could put in their notebook as an organizing tool. I took this from the 7th grade TAKS study guide. It will use some numbers but fractions would need to be pasted in.

PART 2: VOICETHREAD - This could be a cool tool to use for research prompts or even online homework tests or class conversations. This is very similar to the Holt textbook online videos you can get. If you don't show them in the classroom, you can sometimes get great teaching tips from watching them yourself. Thoughts on this video:

This is a very exciting way to learn, especially with classes requiring research. Don't forget to consider the time needed to CREATE the visuals for the camera, the script, the practice and re-take time and the available technology load required.

The student is very well spoken and articulate. My ESL students would have difficulty with this unless they could do it in Spanish. One possible long-term project idea would be for them to create it in Spanish and then in English.

The student has a very deep understanding of connectivism.

A class that is 3 days in class and 2 days online would require that all students have a computer and internet connection at home. Low socioeconomics put a wrench in this unless all students are in a technology class at school.

I get very excited when I see things like this but then a bit deflated when I think about standardized tests and the amount of curriculum crammed into a year ending in TAKS.

Thing #23 LAST BUT NOT LEAST!

1.My favorite discoveries on 23Things were the components involving images and gadgets. It has truly opened my eyes to all that I DIDN'T know and made me aware of the ever-changing and expanding resources available on Web 2.0 and beyond.
3.One unexpected outcome is that I was surprised, again, by what I didn't know. I had always considered myself to be pretty techno-savvy--(NOT!). I was also surprised that I actually started to enjoy blogging!
4.The program's format is solid. That would have given me more time to organize these things versus scrambling about while I'm out of town and attempting to complete this by the deadline time. I had pictures on my cell phone of the Snowy Range in Wyoming that I wanted to use. I had Bluetooth capability. I bought a "Dongle" which is a USB adapter that allows you to transfer pictures from your cell phone into your PC. My computer would not allow me to install because I don't have administrator privledges. I then tried downloading a free PC Suite from Nokia but had the same problem. Perhaps SBISD should let us download devices so that we can actuall USE all this technology. It would be nice to not be stymied at every turn. I ended up e-mailing myself all the pictures from my cell phone--goodness knows how much that is going to cost me since I DON'T have a media package. I have posted the BEGINNING of a photostory but it is nowhere near being done. I will come back and finish it later. Once I got the microphone to FINALLY work it became fun. It was very easy to import pictures into Photostory (which is already installed on the SBISD laptop) and the process of recording audio is also eased by a feature that allows you to write notes to refer to while you are recording. These are great tools to have explored! NOW I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE WHEN I TRY TO POST THE PHOTOSTORY DRAFT. If you see it in this post it means I prevailed! For HELP go to http://lib2pad.blogspot.com/ and ALSO see my COMMENT on the Thing #21 assignment.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v10.nonxt6.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D4b10d80303c2d029%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331327053%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D853973569D40B210537F170C9F1D57D13AD136F0.3C59AF5D75D4E13EA311495608F326BC02BE540%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D4b10d80303c2d029%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DDHAwrShduJ3jbS2X-8JSApUZ9lk&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Thing#22 Ring-Ring--IT'S NING!!

I like this!! Creating collections--don't waste time and money acquiring material that you only predict will be needed. DOES THIS ALSO APPLY TO CLASSROOM MATERIALS & TEXTBOOKS? I think maybe so.

2. Libraries (and those that provide FUNDING) must concentrate on EQUIPMENT and STAFF to help train the patrons to quickly find the research and materials that they need and not fumble around with inefficient search engines. MY CLASSROOM HAS NEVER HAD ENOUGH COMPUTERS to integrate technology on a daily basis--a standard that is waved in front of teachers but not supported by staffing, IT, and school equipment. Certain student demographics limit expectations for students to always have a computer at home.

3. Library services must shift their VISIBILITY out of a BUILDING and into the place that techno-savy people now reside--the WEB. He says, "It’s going to have to happen one library—one little boat—at a time." This could apply to the classroom also as far as how teachers present curriculum -- Can we PODCAST lessons? We've slowly moved into the ACTIV board classroom and we need to realize that the only educators that are going to survive the WEB flood that we are already in are those that steer their own boats into the current instead of against it.

Thing #14 Technor--ICKY!

I DID claim my blog on Technorati. No *&#@ expletives!

I commented on five blogs and found (searched) a few more to comment on that were of a more personal note. One drew my attention about Love After Fifty!! I posted my own personal story on that one.

On Cool Cat Teacher blog I found it interesting to learn about CoComment to keep track of the comments you make on other blogs: http://www.cocomment.com/

The most important rule: NEVER: Be sarcastic, rant prolifically, curse, or personally attack a person.
These are manners that our parents taught us are they not? I wish more people would follow this behavior when invading the PUBLIC space of others in the real world. For example, I was in a restaurant/bar with my fiance for a vacation toddy and a gentleman sitting in the same room was speaking very loudly to his friend about blankety *&P#*** blank *** blank ****-ing (fill in with the most horrific exletives you can imagine) at the TOP of his voice. This happened not just once but several times. If I had not been ready to leave i would have said something. I did mention it to the young son of the owner and he just shrugged. Hmmm....is it just youth? I must admit that I do not always follow ALL of these rules when dealing with corporate consumer issues but when posting blog comments on someone else's space it would seem to logically be the most important guideline.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wyomingnan.blogspot.com/2008/07/thing-12-comment-zone-no-expletives.html' title='Thing #12 Comment ZONE! So many things. I read David Armano's 4Cs regarding what constitutes a good blog. I read another link group blog from his site about Why Blogging Matters: 6 Degrees of Perspective. Things I found interesting: Ideas about how corporate blogging must be careful about being consistent with their customer relations. Bloggers are smart and can spot what Pete Blackshaw (Chief Marketing Officer of Nielsen BuzzMetricsx) calls “touch-point discontinuity." This is basically when a corporation appears to be talking out of two sides of their mouths regarding customer reponse and service. They can't claim to be responsive to their customers just because they have a blog--they must be responsive at all customer touchpoints. This got me to thinking that blogging has potentially become a consumers union--a tool where consumers can get action when other "technical support" channels have failed. I love consumer advocate issues. Many people give up when things have gone awry in a consumer-business transaction. On the other hand there are a lot of litigious whiners out there that don't want to say anything was actually their own fault. Can blogs be a whiners heaven?
Another idea in Armono's 4Cs regarding CONTENT is that people want knowledge--if you know something of VALUE, share it. This gives me ideas regarding my own consumer advocacy experiences.
OK--Back to setting up the blog itself. As I looked around I found it very overwhelming: RSS feeds, Twitter, Facebook, tags, Technorati, Trackback, d.links, and all the choices to check on setting up your blog. I'm not sure who can see my blog or even who I WANT to see my blog! I need help on all the preferences. That's all folks.

Thing #2: Are Imposed Habits Good?

Thing #2
I read the instructions and watched the video on 7-1/2 Habits. Took notes. I'm big on notes.
OK--the easiest habit? Every habit from two through seven. All that stuff is easy for me. 7-1/2 is a little hard. I tend to work too hard and too long and not make time to play. Habit number one is the big problem for me--not making a goal but PLANNING. Writing down the steps. Keeping a journal. I love to write but if I'm told I HAVE to write down daily entries or write out daily food journal or a a step-by-step plan or make a budget, I resist. All that make a Learning Contract with myself, writing down the obstacles, target dates, etc.....sign. I just have an aversion to it. I'm more of an intuitive person. As a teacher, having to write plans using imposed formats just rubs me the wrong way. If someone says here--teach this lesson--I'm fine with it because I don't follow the "plan" word for word--I use it as my jumping off point--I can be really creative in that type of atmosphere. After all, imposed formats change every few years don't they. Come on now, you all know what I'm talking about. Anyone else have similar thoughts? Goal: Find a way to map out goals that doesn't feel "fake"!

Thing #1: Jump Start

Thing #1
Read it--fumbled around a bit.
